I first started working on a graphic novel adaptation for my dear friend George Herman, based on his book Carnival of Saints. The novel was originally published by Ballantine in 1994 and is about the birth of Commedia dell'Arte. Set during the decline of the Borgia papacy and the Papal States Wars, George's characters and prose are warm and witty, and I loved the story at first read. Loosely based on characters from his original play A Company of Wayward Saints, the story centers around a group of vagabonds, runaways, thieves, and prostitutes who eventually create a new art form as a ruse to escape the spies of the Duke of the Romagna, Cesare
